Mr Lionel Lye
I graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature (Second Upper Honours). After several years of service, I pursued a Master of Philosophy in Educational Leadership and School Improvement at the University of Cambridge.
My career in teaching General Paper began in a junior college, where I assumed the role of Acting Deputy Head of the subject, and took charge of developing the General Paper curriculum for the cohort. Having learned from a fantastic group of experienced educators, I went on to mentor my colleagues in the teaching of Project Work, a subject that consistently delivered value-added results for the college. I was able to build upon my experience in my HQ posting, where I assisted Zonal Directors and Cluster Superintendents. Throughout my time in education, I am grateful to have been recognised with the Outstanding Contribution Award and Excellent Service Award. More important to me however are the multiple interactions with students, parents and colleagues, which remind me of the importance of our work as teachers.
My personal vision in education has always been to help students, especially those who do not wish to learn, develop a strong desire to learn. Every individual has a unique personal and social contribution to make, and I believe that the role of education is to support each individual in discovering this.
Joining Eunoia Junior College is an exciting chance for the injection of new ideas and pedagogical innovations. As Head of Department for English, I want our students to see the relevance of what they are studying in the context of their past, present and future, and to sharpen their own skills to contribute to society. Critical thinking is an enduring trait of a future thought leader, and we need to help them stay grounded in social realities.
Lionel joined the college as a pioneering Head of Department in 2015.
